PROGRAM

The fourth annual Joan H. Tisch Public Health Forum: Can City Food Policies Reduce Disparities? Lessons from New York and London presented an informative panel discussion to explore what cities can and should do to make a difference to health inequities through food-related policies.  Both the US and the UK are currently experiencing obesity epidemics. The health consequences of food-related illnesses including diabetes, heart disease and cancer are well documented, as are health disparities among different populations related to these diseases. This program examined the benefits and challenges of addressing disparities through food policies and the role of municipal governments in tackling this issue.

RESOURCES

  • The Joan H. Tisch Legacy Project

The Joan H. Tisch Legacy Project is a multi-disciplinary initiative made possible by a grant from the Tisch family that addresses critical issues in urban public health. In addition to the annual Joan H. Tisch Public Health Forum, the project’s components include the Joan H. Tisch Community Health Prize, awarded annually to an individual and organization for outstanding accomplishments in the field of urban public health, and the Joan H. Tisch Distinguished Visiting Fellowship in Public Health, awarded annually to a leading practitioner or scholar in the field.

  • The Laurie M. Tisch Illumination Fund

Founded in 2007 by philanthropist Laurie M. Tisch, the Laurie M. Tisch Illumination Fund supports innovative strategies to address long-standing problems in New York City. Inspired by her parents, Joan H. Tisch and the late Preston Robert Tisch, Ms. Tisch sought a philanthropic outlet that would advance the idea that everyone should have access to positive and enriching opportunities that define a full range of human experience and that circumstances of birth should not limit choices or short circuit success for anyone.
