The Joan H. Tisch Community Health Prize honors not-for-profit organizations and individuals for distinguished accomplishment in the field of urban public health.  Made possible by a grant from Steve, Laurie, Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch, the Prize is a tribute to their mother in recognition of her humanitarian activism in health care and social services in New York City. It is part of a three-component Joan H. Tisch Legacy Project that also sponsors a Distinguished Fellow in Public Health at Hunter College and a Public Health Forum at Hunter’s Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute.

Turning Point for Women and Families is a grassroots, community-based organization in Queens addressing the needs of Muslim women and children through crisis intervention, counseling, advocacy, outreach, education and training, particularly in the area of domestic violence. It offers culturally competent services to respond to the wide gap between needs and programs available to this community.

Independence Care System’s Breast Cancer Screening Project for Women with Physical Disabilities was launched in 2007 to reduce persistent barriers and improve access to preventive and primary health care for low-income women with disabilities, a chronically underserved population. Due to its success, the project has been expanded to provide other gynecological care and now includes partner hospitals in three boroughs.

Robert Cordero, Executive Director of CitiWide Harm Reduction in the South Bronx, has spent much of his career working to ameliorate the ills suffered by people with HIV/AIDS or those at risk for the disease. CitiWide works to improve the health and social status of active drug users who are homeless or unstably housed, and other marginalized groups. Under his leadership, CitiWide has expanded its services while improving its fiscal and programmatic stability.
