On February 29, we welcomed Dominic Tierney, author of The Right Way to Lose a War: America in an Age of Unwinnable Conflicts, in conversation with Andrew Polsky, the Ruth and Harold Newman Dean of the School of Arts & Sciences, Hunter College. Tierney discussed the ways in which that the United States can stem the tide of losses that have marked the failures and stalemates of conflicts in Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan – and in the future withdraw from unsuccessful campaigns without compromising our core values and interests.

For nearly a century, up until the end of World War II in 1945, America achieved decisive military triumphs. The decades since have exposed what Tierney, associate professor of political science at Swarthmore and contributing editor at The Atlantic, argues has been an inability to change course after battlefield setbacks.

This timely conversation on the future of American military strategy took place on the eve of the March 1 Super Tuesday presidential primaries, as part of Roosevelt House’s Keynote Series: Decision 2016.
