PROGRAM

Join us at Roosevelt House for a discussion with experts working on policy solutions to address the complex set of issues facing lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people in the large areas of Iraq under the control of ISIS.

The rapid advance of the Islamic State has intensified the already deadly risk faced by gender non-conforming individuals living in both government-controlled and ISIS-controlled areas. Our panel of experts will report on their recent visits to the region and discuss current threats as well as the domestic and international policy strategies that will best secure LGBT rights and protections, including shelter laws and the inclusion of women’s voices in peace negotiations.

Speakers include:

Omair Paul, UN Representative, Muslims for Progressive Values
Hossein Alizadeh, MENA Program Coordinator, Outright Action International
Lisa Davis, Human Rights Advocacy Director, MADRE and Clinical Professor of Law, CUNY School of Law
Frankie Hermann and Hilal Khalil, IWHR Clinic, CUNY Law School

Moderated by Jessica Stern, Executive Director, International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission

Reception to follow.
