About:

Daniel Gardner, Ph.D., is Associate Professor at the Silberman School of Social Work and Interim Director at the Brookdale Center for Healthy Aging. Dr. Gardner is a recognized leader in social work and aging with over 25 years of clinical, administrative, and research experience in health and mental health, specializing in social work practice with individuals, families, and groups living with chronic and advanced illness. His scholarly interests include palliative and end-of-life care, psychosocial oncology, family decision-making and communication, health dis-parities in later life, and health and mental health policy. Dr. Gardner received his PhD in Social Work from Columbia University. For the past 15 years, he has taught clinical practice, social welfare policy, and research methods to masters and doctoral students, social workers, and allied health professionals. He has substantial experience and expertise in conducting community-based qualitative and mixed methods research and program evaluation, and his current research explores barriers and facilitators to accessing palliative care and pain management among di-verse community-dwelling elders in East and Central Harlem. Dr. Gardner’s research has been funded by grants from the National Institute of Aging, HRSA, the American Cancer Society, the Fan Fox & Leslie R. Samuels Foundation, and the Translational Institute of Pain in Later Life.
