      Maria Varaki is a Greek lawyer and legal scholar. She earned a law degree from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, an LLM in International and Comparative Law from Tulane University, an LLM in International Legal Studies from New York University, and a PhD in Law from the Irish Centre for Human Rights at the National University of Ireland, Galway. She held a post-doctoral position in International Law at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem School of Law and taught at Kadir Has University in Istanbul. Since September 2016 she has been a post-doctoral research fellow with the Erik Castren Institute of International Law and Human Rights at the University of Helsinki, working on an Aristotelian theory of ethics for global governance. Her current research interests focus on legal theory and virtue ethics, international responsibility with regard to refugee law, international courts and tribunals, the evolution of international law during the Cold War, and populist challenges to the rule of law concept.
