Phil Alcabes, Professor & Director of the Hunter College Community Health Program & Former Roosevelt House Academic Advisor, has published a new article examining the opioid crisis in the U.S. The use and abuse of opioid-based pain relievers, one of the most pressing issues in U.S. medicine today, has also been described as an epidemic. Alcabes’ article, entitled “Drugs ‘R’ Us: Opioid Markets After the Jobs Disappear,” cites several recent studies on the issue. The article considers some of the prominent narratives on opioid use in America, framing the on-going crisis in a socio-political context.
