PROGRAM

Please join us at Roosevelt House as we welcome Hon. Joseph A. Califano, Jr., to mark the publication of his new book, Our Damaged Democracy: We the People Must Act. Califano, who spent more than three decades in Washington, serving at the Pentagon, on Lyndon B. Johnson’s White House staff, and as U. S. Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare, will be in conversation with television news legend Jim Lehrer about why our democracy no longer works and what must be done in order to bring back systems of government that protect freedom and promote fairness.

Califano and Lehrer will discuss the damaging effects of the colossal concentration of power in the Presidency, of a Congress crippled by partisanship and dependence on special interest money, and of a federal court system riven by politics. They will also address the impact of today’s politically fractured and fragile media, feckless campaign finance laws, rampant income and education inequality, and multicultural divisions.

Califano, a member of the Roosevelt House Advisory Board, makes the urgent case that we do not need to agree, but we do need to trust each other and be worthy of that trust, in order to bring back systems of government that protect freedom and promote fairness.

We hope you will participate in this important discussion.
