Cecilia Muñoz will discuss the Administration’s work to create opportunity for all Americans, and ensure that no child’s future is determined by the zip code she grows up in. Over the last six years, the Obama Administration has formed unique partnerships with local leaders to revitalize hard-hit communities, breaking down silos between federal agencies through place-based work. These partnerships, exemplified by the first five Promise Zones President Obama announced earlier this year, have connected key federal education, housing, and infrastructure programs with locally-devised strategies to spur economic growth. This work has generated catalytic progress in communities that have previously suffered from disinvestment and chronic distress, and in areas that continue to struggle even as the economy recovers and unemployment falls. By infusing the principles of these partnerships into programs across the government, the Administration has built a new model for making evidence-based federal investments to support local priorities, turning federal agency staff into partners for local leaders. Cecilia will discuss this progress, and the work ahead to sustain this model through initiatives such as Promise Zones, Choice Neighborhoods, Promise Neighborhoods, and Strong Cities Strong Communities.
