Roosevelt House presents a live Zoom discussion on the timely new documentary The Perfect Weapon, which just premiered on HBO, featuring its executive producer (and author of the bestselling book on which the film is based) David E. Sanger together with executive producer and director John Maggio.

Drawing on interviews with top military, intelligence, and political figures, The Perfect Weapon explores the rise of cyber conflict as a primary tool nations now use to compete with, and sabotage, one another. The film tracks how the use of inexpensive, invisible, and effective cyber weapons has come to shape the present and future of geopolitical engagement. Providing a comprehensive view of the new security vulnerabilities facing our nation and world, The Perfect Weapon addresses concerns over how cyberattacks and influence operations may affect the 2020 election, the national infrastructure, the country’s nuclear weapons arsenal, and the global networks that form the backbone of private enterprise.

The film also takes viewers inside the U.S. government’s ongoing efforts to defend itself from emerging cyber threats while simultaneously stockpiling and using the world’s most powerful offensive cyber arsenal.

David E. Sanger is an award-winning New York Times national security correspondent and senior writer. He has been on three teams that have won Pulitzer Prizes, most recently in 2017 for international reporting. His books include The Perfect Weapon: War, Sabotage and Fear in the Cyber Age; The Inheritance: The World Obama Confronts and the Challenges to American Power; and Confront and Conceal: Obama’s Secret Wars and Surprising Use of American Power.

John Maggio is an Emmy Award-winning producer, director, and writer. His films and documentary series include Panic: The Untold Story of the 2008 Financial Crisis; The Newspaperman: The Life and Times of Ben Bradlee; The Italian Americans; and American Experience.
