PROGRAM

Please join us at Roosevelt House as we welcome Pulitzer Prize-winning historian David J. Garrow, discussing his latest book, Rising Star: The Making of Barack Obama, the definitive account of the president’s formative years.

In his talk, Garrow will examine Obama’s childhood in Honolulu, where he was raised almost exclusively by his white grandparents, his college years in California and New York and his work as a Chicago community organizer. He will also discuss Obama’s years at Harvard Law School, and how, upon his return to Chicago, Obama honed his skills as a politician, culminating in Obama’s four years in the U. S. Senate, and his campaign for the presidency in 2008. Garrow will focus as well on the people and forces that shaped the future president but also the ways in which he used those influences to serve his larger aspirations.

We hope you will be able to participate in this important discussion.
