Please join us at Roosevelt House as we welcome the renowned pediatrician and children’s advocate Irwin Redlener, president and cofounder of the Children’s Health Fund and professor at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health. Dr. Redlener will discuss his memoir,The Future of Us: What the Dreams of Children Mean for Twenty-First-Century America, and the impact that inadequate education, barriers to health care, and crushing poverty have on children’s ability to realize their dreams.
Dr. Redlener, also director of the National Center for Disaster Preparedness and the Program on Child Well-Being and Resilience at Columbia University’s Earth Institute, will explore the personal stories of children who struggle with terrible adversities yet dream of becoming paleontologists, artists, and marine biologists; and he will discuss the larger policy issues that hinder us from effectively eradicating childhood poverty and overcoming barriers to accessible health care — avoidable problems, Dr. Redlener argues, with rippling effects that harm the health, prosperity, and creativity of the adults they become.
