PROGRAM

On November 12, 2015, Roosevelt House will welcome the Social Science Research Council’s Anxieties of Democracy program in a continuing series during which scholars and practitioners analyze current anxieties of democracy. The evening will feature Professor Pierre Rosanvallon of the Collège de France in his inaugural lecture as the Council’s first Democracy Fellow. His lecture and the ensuing dialogue with the audience will seek to energize the conversation and inspire thoughtful and original solutions to the growing democratic problem of inequality.

The event will be introduced and moderated by Ira Katznelson, President of the Social Science Research Council, Ruggles Professor of Political Science and History at Columbia University and Roosevelt House Advisory Board Member

Pierre Rosanvallon  Professor and Chair of Modern and Contemporary History of Politics Collège de France

Pierre Rosanvallon is Professor and Chair of Modern and Contemporary History of Politics at the Collège de France. He is also a Director of Studies at École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, or School of Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences, in Paris, and the founder of two vibrant and prestigious intellectual fora, La République des Idées (in print) and La Vie des Idées.fr (online). His work is devoted to the history of the French political model and the historical and theoretical study of changes in contemporary democracy.  

Rosanvallon is respected and renowned all over the world for the originality of his approach, which is to consider the history of democracy as the exploration of a problematic experience. His most recent book, Le bon gouvernement (Éditions du Seuil, 2015), is the fourth volume in his series on the transformations of democracy in the 21st century. 


Ira Katznelson  Ruggles Professor of Political Science and History at Columbia University

Ira Katznelson is Columbia University’s Ruggles Professor of Political Science and History. Having served as president of the American Political Science Association, he is a member of the Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Philosophical Society. His most recent book is Fear Itself: The New Deal and the Origins of Our Time.
