(March 31, 2022) The LGBTQ Policy Center at Roosevelt House today honors the International Day of Transgender Visibility. March 31 is dedicated to celebrating the accomplishments and lives of transgender, gender non-conforming, and non-binary people who have led our communities toward LGBTQ equality and liberation. This day also serves to raise awareness of the remaining work necessary to combat the discrimination, violence, erasure, and harassment that the trans community continues to face.

We celebrate the significant accomplishments that have been made towards trans justice in New York, including passing the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act (GENDA) in 2019 and repealing the state’s anti-loitering law — the infamous “Walking While Trans” ban — in 2021. Despite these advances, transgender people — especially Black and brown trans people — continue to face disproportionate rates of discrimination in employment and increased rates of violence and harassment. The LGBTQ Policy Center deeply supports the trans community and urges lawmakers to pass policies that recognize the human rights and dignity of transgender people.
