Jon Huntsman was a 2012 Republican Presidential Candidate and former Governor of Utah. Fluent in Mandarin Chinese and Taiwanese Hokkein, Huntsman served as U.S. Ambassador to Singapore and to China. At the event, he spoke about the rise of China as a geopolitical power and the ramifications of its ascent for the United States.

Governor Jon Huntsman is the most recent former U.S. Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China (2009-2011), and the twice-elected former Governor of Utah (2005-2009). He has served in the administrations of four U.S. Presidents, having entered public service as a staff assistant to the President during the Reagan administration. He was later named U.S. Ambassador to Singapore under President George H.W. Bush, becoming the youngest head of an American diplomatic mission in a century. In his later role as Deputy U.S. Trade Representative under President George W. Bush, Governor Huntsman helped negotiate dozens of free trade agreements with Asian and African nations. Governor Huntsman was a candidate for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination.
