As America ponders its future competitiveness globally, many experts are pointing to historic examples of public-private partnerships as a possible model forward. One such historic example, forged between IBM and President Franklin D. Roosevelt over 70 years ago, involved the implementation of the Social Security Act – a landmark project that helped launch the information processing revolution.

What will that next great public-private partnership focus area be? On December 8, 2011, IBM and the Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute at Hunter College convened experts from across private enterprise, government, and academia to explore this defining issue.

The session also held a demonstration of IBM’s Watson system and a presentation by the IBM Research team exploring the technology’s role in the workplace of the future.

The forum featured keynotes from New York City’s Deputy Mayor for Economic Development, Robert K. Steel, and IBM’s General Manager for North America, Bridget van Kralingen.

Other speakers and panelists included:

John Seely Brown – Author & former Chief Scientist, Xerox Corporation

Jonathan Fanton – FDR Fellow and Interim Director, Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute at Hunter College, former MacArthur Foundation President

Dave McQueeny – Vice President, IBM Research

Jennifer J. Raab – President, Hunter College

Kathryn S. Wylde – President & CEO, Partnership for New York City
